In 1938, S.F. Porter became the financial editor of the New York Post – but Sylvia Porter did not reveal her name and gender to her avid readers until 1942. At the height of her career, she had a readership of 40 million people. In 1998, Maria Bartiromo became the first woman to report from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. As a result of these and any number of groundbreaking women – ranging from Jane Bryant Quinn to Suze Orman to Jean Chatzky – there are many authoritative women's voices reporting and advising on financial markets, industry and investments.
As we continue to weather a volatile economic climate, it is fitting that the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation honor Women in Numbers: the women researching, analyzing and reporting on financial issues on television, in print, and online -- as well as the women controlling the purse strings at some of the nation's leading media companies, such as CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg, MSNBC and many others. Held in the global financial capital, New York City, AWM will celebrate the accomplishments and influence of a number of talented, savvy and skilled professionals.
Building on our Symposium on Financial Marketing to Women, to be held on October 29th at Sony's Innovation Center, this breakfast allows an opportunity to celebrate the significant impact made by women in this critical, but still underrepresented field.
