RADIO LAB, ASSOCIATE PRODUCER (Position 2) - WNYC

Overview:

WNYC Radio seeks an Associate Producer to join a tremendously creative staff that serves a passionate, diverse audience and produces an unparalleled product. Reporting to the Senior Producer of Radiolab, the Associate Producer will be a important part of the Radiolab production team and play a vital role in the new Discovery Dialogues project, funded by the National Science Foundation.

The Associate Producer must have comfort and experience when dealing with science content. The ability to communicate with a wide range of people is key. Social-savvy and attention to detail are important qualities. The successful candidate will be a good storyteller, demonstrate fearlessness in pursuit of information and strong instincts for finding great voices, resulting in stellar tape and engaging online articles. An inquisitive nature and an ability to work in a tightly-knit team are required.

The Associate Producer will collaborate with the Communications Manager and the Executive Producer to cultivate conversation with Radiolab's audience on science questions. While seeking answers to these questions, the Associate Producer will work closely with a Public Insight Network analyst to cultivate sources in the networks, finding new voices to bring both to the air and Radiolab's website. In addition, the associate producer will convene "listening parties" to engage scientists and others key audience members with Radiolab's science, technology, math and engineering content.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:

• Identify, interview and book sources from the Public Insight Network

• Cut interview and track tape

• Write blog articles on STEM topics

• Under the direction of the Communications Manager, work with sources, Radiolab's audience and Advisory Counsel scientists to develop story ideas and articles for the blog

• Organize 2-4 audio listening events per year which will highlight STEM content and present additional context and information to participants

• Assemble audio clips to be the aural version of print scripts

• Report and produce pieces

• Propose scripts/segments from interviews performed by our hosts and others

• Assist with research for story ideas, book guests, arrange logistics (such as tape syncs, ISDNS, travel plans)

• Must be able to travel as required for reporting and recording

• Write and editing material, and prepare audio for broadcast

• Assist during tapings and digital audio production for the show

• Perform occasional field reporting and/or recording

• Work on other special projects as assigned and other duties as assigned

At least half of the Associate Producer's job will be developing, reporting and building Radiolab's audio content. The position involves extensive communication with other staff members.

The Associate Producer must be a self-starter and thrive in a collaborative, innovation-focused work environment.

Desired Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree required

• Science, science communication or science journalism experience preferred

• Three years of journalism, print and/or broadcast experience required

• Demonstrated research skills required

• Experience organizing and publicizing events

• Experience working with sound recordings; digital audio editing experience and protools skills preferred

• Previous radio production experience recommended

• Ability to prioritize and handle several projects at once are required

• Excellent verbal and written communication are required

• Sound organizational skills, with great attention to detail are required

• Ability to meet objectives under deadline pressure is required

• Requires ability to work in a group environment and to take direction well

• Must be able to work in a studio broadcast and/or office environment and must be able to work remotely on occasion

• Requires the ability to establish and sustain a wide variety of community and industry relationships that are essential to the show's success

• Must be a team player and effective collaborator

• Experience working with live-audience programs preferred
