For almost a decade, the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation has been telling the stories of inspiring women from America history with its Empowering America® program.
Ford Motor Company Fund has supported the Empowering America program for fie years. In 2012, AWMF with the support of the Ford Motor Company Fund will donate educational booklets and artisan-quality posters to middle schools in Dallas and Nashville meaning thousands of middle school students will be exposed to the true stories of American women who have made a difference.
The Empowering America program also includes a student scholarship. The competition challenged students to create a short video celebrating the many inspiring women featured in the Empowering America collateral. The winning video from George Mason University student Abbesi Akhamie highlights the many ways these women influenced the course of American history and how their legaciese continue to impact us today.

In 2011, the Empowering America program expanded to include a $5,000 student scholarship. The competition challenged students to create a short video celebrating the many inspiring women featured in the Empowering America collateral. This inspiring campaign touched the hearts of radio listeners while conveying an important education about the history of pioneering American women. The Empowering America® spots featured American female icons who have blazed trails in diverse areas such as public service, science, social reform, sports, literature, broadcasting, music and aviation. The spots highlighted recognizable individuals, such as Betsy Ross, Sandra Day O'Connor and Audrey Hepburn, as well as women who have made a difference in our world, but whose names are relatively unknown, such as Gertrude Elion and Virginia Apgar. Each vignette focused on an individual woman by telling, in compelling and emotional fashion, her personal story of empowerment and success.
In 2008, AWM expanded the Empowering America® program to share the stories of these amazing women with underprivileged middle schools across the country. In partnership with the Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, we developed educational collateral and put it in the hands of teachers to stimulate and enhance classroom conversations about these female icons.
