Chesley Maddox-Dorsey on Staying Open, Embracing Change and Building a Career in Media

The November AWM Office Hours session brought together members with Chesley Maddox-Dorsey, CEO of American Urban Radio Networks and a member of the AWM Board of Directors. Reflecting on a career that began in finance before pivoting to broadcasting, she shared how curiosity, adaptability and a commitment to her core values have guided her through an ever-changing media landscape. At the heart of her work is a belief in the power of connection and storytelling: “Stories, at the end of the day, are what people want to hear. That’s what people relate to.”

That willingness to evolve was a recurring theme throughout the conversation. Ms. Maddox-Dorsey discussed the opportunities created by digital media and streaming, particularly their ability to give more voices a platform, while also emphasizing the responsibility media professionals have to their audiences. “We need to tell the truth. We need to admit our mistakes,” she said. She also encouraged media professionals to remain open to change rather than assuming they need to have every answer. “I’m not an expert in everything, but I’m smart enough to know people who are,” she shared, noting that much of her success has come from surrounding herself with talented people, asking questions and continuing to learn.

For those beginning or building careers in media, Ms. Maddox-Dorsey was equally candid about the importance of hard work, curiosity and continuous growth. Despite the industry’s ongoing transformation, she remains enthusiastic about its possibilities. “There are things that are more lucrative, but I don’t know what could be more fun and more interesting,” she said. Her advice was to stay open to opportunities, work hard and keep getting better. She also reminded attendees that success does not have to be pursued alone: “We’ve got to find somebody that we can relate to in some way that has our back.”

That kind of candid conversation is at the heart of AWM Office Hours, an exclusive benefit of Alliance for Women in Media membership that gives members direct access to accomplished leaders across the media industry. From career lessons and leadership advice to honest conversations about change, challenges and opportunities, Office Hours creates a space for members to ask questions, make connections and learn from those who have helped shape the industry.
